Windows Azure Big Compute
Important
announcements were made on November 13 in the Windows Azure team blog: the cloud platform will soon have opportunities to deploy systems with a large memory consumption for complex computational tasks (Big Compute).
In a short time, Windows Azure clients will be able to get at their disposal two new configurations of instances and virtual machines: 8 cores with 60 GB of memory and 16 cores and 120 GB of memory. Each of these virtual machines will have the following specifications:
- Dual Intel Sandybridge processors at 2.6 GHz
- DDR3 1600 MHz RAM
- 10 GigE network for storage and internet access
- InfiniBand (IB) 40 Gbps network with RDMA
The developers of the Windows Azure platform tested the new features, forming a cluster of 8064 cores, which showed remarkable performance in 151.3 TFlops, hitting 165th place in the
world famous
TOP500 supercomputers .
Other examples of practical use of Windows Azure for loaded computing were given in the
blog : scaling the molecular dynamics calculation system NAMD, MG-ALFA financial risk modeling system, insurance cost modeling for Towers Watson, genome research based
on FaST-LMM algorithms .
It is expected that the new features will be available to developers in December with the release of the Microsoft HPC Pack 2012 platform.
A large number of innovations in the administration portal
Scott Guthrie in his blog announced the next batch of innovations in the Windows Azure administration portal. Among them:

- Monitoring SQL Database Performance Metrics
- Web Sites projects can now be published to all regions of Windows Azure
- Added support for closed GitHub and BitBucket repositories
- Added the ability to download the package and deploy the Cloud Service from the admin panel
- Added ability to configure caching in a role with cache enabled
- Added the ability to publish, encode, and play Media Services data from the administration panel.
- Ability to set Windows Azure Storage to your own domain name
- Improvements in terms of usability when creating virtual networks, simplifying the process of creating
- Usability Improvements in Creating Virtual Machines
- Localization of the portal into 6 languages (unfortunately there is no Russian among them)
About each of the innovations
can be read in
detail on the blog by Scott Guthrie.
