The robot draws portraits almost like a man

Patrick Tresse, a French artist and programmer who lives in London, has for several years been creating a robot that can draw like a human. Usually, the machine imitation of strokes and lines made by the human hand looks fake and primitive, but Patrick managed to achieve impressive successes. A robot named Paul, created as part of the Aikon-II project, draws quite convincingly and naturally. His algorithms are the fruit of years of studying and analyzing thousands of graphic works by artists from different eras and styles.

Patrick Tresse admits that a mechanical hand that holds a pen and a stroke behind the stroke creates a portrait of a person - rather a decoration that creates a psychological mood with the viewer, because the same image could be printed in a few seconds on the printer. But the process of generating a portrait itself is based on modeling human perception and movements of the artist’s hand. In the future, Tresse plans to teach Paul to imitate the style of different artists and combine them, developing her own style.
