Amazon.com has built a hosting center in Europe

Amazon has announced the opening of the Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) European division of hosting service - a unique service of its kind that specializes in servicing new-generation web startups. Its distinguishing feature is the ability to seamlessly integrate traffic from Amazon S3 into the general traffic flow from the main hosting center, so the site is able to withstand almost any load, no matter where it is located.

Operations on the Amazon S3 file system are performed at the “object” level, which can be from 1 byte to 5 GB in size and have unique identifiers. At the moment, more than 10 billion objects are stored on the hosting, and about 290 thousand developers have already signed up for the services of specialized web services of Amazon, among which hosting is the main one.

Since the opening of Amazon S3 in March 2006, all customers of this service have been serviced by servers in North America, and all information was physically stored there. For European users, besides the problems with the time of access to the servers, this could also cause potential legal difficulties in terms of data privacy. After starting the servers in the European Union, all these problems are a thing of the past.

Unfortunately, prices in European data centers are about 20% higher than in the US, as well as additional fees for data transfer from the European hosting center to the American “computing cloud” Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. File storage costs $ 0.18 per gigabyte per month instead of $ 0.15 in the United States. This is due to the high cost of local infrastructure. For example, in Europe, electricity is more expensive.
