Sony will continue to lead the project Xperia S AOSP independently

Today we are moving the AOSP project to Xperia S , over which the technical director of Google’s Android Open Source Project ( AOSP ) Jean-Baptist Curie (JBK) has recently worked, from the main AOSP branch to Sony git on GitHub. Although ZhBK considers the experiment with Xperia S AOSP to be successful, we do this because, starting with Jelly Bean MR1, Xperia S will be removed from the position of the key device in the main AOSP branch. But since we noticed a great interest from the community in this work, we will continue to work on Sony git, and leave it open for collaboration for partners and developers. Read below for detailed explanations from Sony developers Bjorn Andersson and Johan Redestig.

Bjorn Andersson and Johan Redestig

Hello! We, Bjorn Andersson and Johan Redestig, are software developers at Sony. We both worked with Android to bring ups since the development of the first Sony Ericsson smartphone on Android, and we both made significant contributions to AOSP - see Johan Redestig and Bjorn Anderson on the AOSP website. Now one of our tasks will be AOSP support on Xperia S git from Sony.

We understand that the Xperia AOSP project is being transferred to our GitHub, since Google cannot support non-Nexus devices on the AOSP in the mainline for a long time. Starting with Android 4.2, Xperia S will not be supported as a target device in the main AOSP branch. However, since the RCB launched the AOSP project on the Xperia S, we have seen a great interest from the Android community to this work, and therefore we decided to continue the project ourselves.

Since this is now our project, we will have a powerful tool to assist in the development of AOSP and their verification. And since this is an open project, we will be able to collaborate with both Google and Qualcomm, and with the community of Android developers.

Technical status of the project

At the moment we have several tasks in our work. Thanks to the code we publish on GitHub, the current version of the software available in AOSP can be installed on Xperia S, and supports the operation of SD-cards, Wi-Fi and sensors. And also (as you can see in the video above), on internal tests we now have audio and a modem. However, these features of this version require the use of copyrighted code, so we cannot publish it now.

Further steps will be aimed at replacing some published parts of the code with the original one, as well as ensuring that Android 4.2 works on Xperia S. It can be used as a development platform, as well as a basis for working on opening the source code for a larger number of modules. For the latest technical status information, log in to the project on GitHub .

We hope that other members of the Android-development community will take part in the project. If you are interested in helping a project, go to the project's GitHub page . Meet the code and freely browse the task list to see where your help can come in handy. And if you have questions, just leave a comment on this post on the Sony developer blog.
