Wikipedia introduces an advanced open-source player on its website

Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia known to all of us, announced yesterday a new player that is being introduced both on this resource and on other related sites. The player, according to the Wikipedia team, was created in order to make it easier for users to add educational videos (and of course, the ability to view these videos by other users). This is the same HTML5 player that is used in the open-source Kaltura video platform.

The player is integrated with MediaWiki (software, all Wikimedia sites are based on) through the TimedMediaHandler extension. The new player will replace the old one, supported only by the Ogg format, and used since 2007.

By itself, based on the HTML5 player allows you to play audio and video files on the pages of Wikipedia. In addition, the player allows you to transcribe video, show subtitles in different languages (with the subtitles you can easily translate from language to language).

TimedMediaHandler also supports the open WebM format, which makes it possible to use CC videos from YouTube on Wikipedia. You can also translate video into other formats (on the server side, of course), if the user wants it.

It is worth noting that, despite the abundance of information on Wikipedia, the video is not very much there, just now there are 15 thousand videos. An advanced video player, which has been under development for several years, opens the way for the appearance of a large amount of video content. At the same time, the Wikipedia guide warned that only educational videos are allowed to be downloaded. Video entertainment is not recommended and even prohibited.

And yes, it’s just not possible to insert the video code from YouTube; you can only insert a video through Wikimedia Commons, where you must first upload the pasted video. Not as simple as usual, but authors usually follow the rules of the encyclopedia.
