Microsoft patents a new type of DRM protection - tracking users who view content
This is a Microsoft patent with an unambiguous name CONTENT DISTRIBUTION REGULATION BY VIEWING USER , which deals with the methods of distributing content and accessing a certain number of people to it.
In essence, a device for DRM protection is a kind of Kinect console, which should be located so that the sensors of the device can “recount” the number of people watching the media broadcast and, if their number exceeds a certain value, then take the necessary - issue a window with a warning or stop the transfer altogether.
This is schematically represented in the patent as follows: ')
In principle, DRM-protection is able to perform control on the following parameters and on their combinations:
Restrict access to content by the number of views
Restrict access to the number of views in a certain period of time
Restrict access to the number of people watching content simultaneously
Restrict access by age
The patent specifically emphasizes that we are talking about the user segment of content consumption - there is no intention to track individuals or groups of them yet.
