Keyboard, idea, two hands

Did% username% happen in your life when you longed for a strange thing? No matter what - because everyone has different tastes and preferences. My passion has been sitting in me for a long time, but one day it still broke out. I like to do unusual things, and I always liked modding as a means of self-expression. A few years ago, I was inspired by modders from different countries and started thinking about several of my projects. In particular, I really wanted to make a nineteenth century stylized keyboard.

')
Having studied the work of such famous modders as Filimon and Datamancer , I started to work. I just want to say that although I do not complain about the complete lack of imagination, I love getting a predictable result. Therefore, before taking up the instrument, I tried to simulate what I want to get in the end. Another feature of this project is that all the software that I used in my work is open and free: OS - Debian testing, software - Blender, LibreCAD, Inkscape.

Since my intention was to make a keyboard in a wooden case, first of all I needed to know the sections of the wooden blanks that I would need. Carefully measuring the donor keyboard, I sat down at drawing and modeling.

Having drawn two-dimensional projections, I started modeling in 3D.

So, the appearance of the device loomed and it's time to embody it in wood and brass. Ash and oak veneer for linings were chosen as the material for the hull.

The donor keyboard in the final must be between two veneered MDF plates. Seats of the keys were carefully measured and on the basis of the data obtained a drawing was drawn up in LibreCAD. According to it, the holes in the MDF plate will be cut.

The green LEDs were removed and, in their place, larger-sized LEDs, giving a warm, luminescent glow, were soldered in. In order for the LEDs to look even warmer and lighter, a brass plate was made for them.

According to the drawings, wooden bars of the required sections were ordered, which were further processed with the hands holding the tool. According to the same drawings.

In the device, by the way, a USB hub was supposed, the holes for which were immediately profiled. Also under this brass plate was made.

The whole construction will be tightened with studs, but I absolutely did not want nuts and ends of studs sticking out of my product, so I decided to make decorative brass plugs.

As for the keys themselves, I had the option to make them from buttons, but I decided that this is not a tru. Therefore, the round keys were carved from brass rod, and the oblong keys were forged from brass plate.

Separately, the space bar was made. It consists of three soldered blanks.

Keyboards were cut from glossy black plastic. Letters and symbols are applied using laser engraving.

After all the preparatory work, the parts were carefully sanded, ground, opened with several layers of wood stains and obtained (also in several layers). After assembly, everything began to look something like this.

Additionally, a case was also made.

The dream came true, but now there is an overwhelming desire to raise the bar higher. It is a lot of ideas, besides, it is very interesting to challenge yourself. Wish me success.

PS I answer numerous questions: the Defender Accent 930 keyboard was used as a donor.
