Google has seriously updated satellite photographs of Mars in the
Google Mars project. Much of the territory of Mars is now represented by images taken by a Context Camera (CTX) camera on a Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter
satellite . The photos have an excellent resolution of 6 meters per pixel - this is better than most of the Earth’s coverage on Google Maps (15 meters per pixel) and much better than previous photos of Mars. To assess the difference in quality, you can compare the same section with old maps and updated maps.

Separate parts of the surface of Mars are captured even with a resolution
30 cm per pixel! This was a
HIRISE camera on the same Mars exploration satellite.
Updated satellite photographs are made in gray scale, so that they are visually easy to distinguish from old maps.
