Metro-UI Windows 8 UI was not such a unique development of Microsoft. The company
SurfCast filed a lawsuit in Maine, accusing Microsoft of violating its patent, describing the "tiled" interface.

A Microsoft spokesman said the company's confidence that the court found the lawsuit unfounded, due to the fact that Microsoft created a unique user experience.
By the way, SurfCast, for 11 years of its existence, it gave birth to as much as one UI concept and received four patents for it. Neither prototypes, nor, moreover, the real application of the interface in nature does not exist.
The company also appeals to the fact that Microsoft knew about the existence of the patent 6724403 - it was listed as relevant in the patent application Metro-UI, filed in 2009.
It turns out that this is no longer the usual patent trolling: SurfCast's chances of winning are very high if the intentional use of its Microsoft products is proven.
