As you could understand from the previous post , we at Nokia treat navigation not as a hobby, but as one of the central pillars of our ecosystem. Therefore, today's conversation will be about Nokia Navigator - especially since today we have an excellent reason for this.
A few months ago, we announced the release of a new version of our free navigator - Nokia Drive 3.0. At the same time, it was announced that it will be installed on all devices with Windows Phone 8 on board. This is a big step for us, and we look forward to the opportunity to demonstrate to owners of phones from other manufacturers a small but important part of our ecosystem.

One of the key chips that is implemented in Nokia Navigator 3.0 is “My Routes” (in the English version - My Commute). “Commute”, according to Lingvo, is translated as “the distance covered during daily trips from the suburbs to the city (usually to work)” . The purpose of this feature is to save time on such daily trips. Nokia Navigator remembers the routes you use most often and automatically analyzes the traffic situation on them - in real time, indicating the estimated travel time and suggesting detour routes from those you have already traveled. Now you will know for sure if you have time for an extra cup of tea in the morning - as soon as the traffic situation changes, Nokia Drive will let you know about it using the notification on the live tile of the application. Previously, this feature was only available in the United States, but from today it can also be used by residents of Russia.
In order for the system to remember the route, it is enough just to drive through it (but in order for it to become perceived in the context of the application, you need to drive it at least twice). You can also enter one route manually.
Where does the data come from to predict travel time? For this we use several sources:
We use data from devices using Nokia Navigator - both from partners and other users. In fact, people using traffic information also act as sources of this information. As we have already written, all such measurements are absolutely anonymous and neither we, nor anyone, has the ability to link specific movement data to a specific user.
Archival information. We use historical information about movements on different parts of the road at different times, which allows you to make predictions.
Modeling. In many cases, the situation throughout the road network can be derived from partial data. For example, if there is information about the congestion in the trunk section, it is clear that the roads adjacent to it also stand.
Separately, we note the issue of data privacy - all information about your routes is stored only on your device and is not transmitted anywhere. You can delete all information about your movements at any time.
To use this feature, you do not need to download any updates - today it is simply activated in the settings. Note that “My Routes” will work not only in new devices on WP8 - the Lumia 900, Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 will also receive this feature.
