Instead of coursework, students edit Wikipedia

Most teachers do not like when students borrow texts for a term paper or essay from Wikipedia. Even Jimmy Wales himself, the founder of Wikipedia, once asked the students not to use the free encyclopedia in term papers and dissertations, as well as for other serious scientific research.

The world's largest source of knowledge was created not for science, but for the education of the masses. To explain this simple truth to her students, Professor Martha Groom (Martha Groom) from the University of Botella (Wash.) Decided to act outside the box. She told each student to publish her term paper not on paper, but on the Wikipedia website. To do this, you need to create a new article there or edit an existing one. Marta told about the unusual experiment at the pedagogical conference EDUCAUSE 2007.

This is really a very interesting approach that has many advantages over writing ordinary coursework. First, student work is not wasted in vain, but benefits mankind. Secondly, the assessment of student work is carried out as objectively as possible by the forces of thousands of other users. Thirdly, it is now simply impossible to borrow the text of a term paper from Wikipedia.

True, the first experience showed that the Wikipedia author community is not a very student experiment. Articles of almost all new authors were deleted or completely rewritten within 24 hours. Among the main complaints are inappropriate style and language of presentation, the wrong choice of sources of information, inability to determine the presence / absence of this or that information in Wikipedia.
