A patent that allows to ban 3d printers from copying illegal content

Not so long ago, a lawyer was mentioned on Habré, who expressed the opinion that right holders would not simply pass by the boom of the 3d press, and certain ways would be developed to bring this matter under control.

Today on technology review, a note appeared, subjecting the opinion that such a development from a fantastic plot can turn into a plane of reality.

The company Intellectual Ventures, received a patent that allows 3d printers, before printing an object, checked against the base for the user's rights to this object. If the copy is “pirated”, the printer will refuse to print it.

Illustration to patent:

The patent covers not only the area of layered 3d printing, but also other ways of reproducing material objects, both 3d and 2d - stamping, casting, printing, drawing and even tattoos (and I see that in the street, lawyers will grab people with tattoos and drag and to court).

Most likely, in the foreseeable future, the mass introduction of such technologies is unlikely - yet printers and the Internet have been around for a long time, and so far, despite the availability of technical capability, printers are not on strike if we try to print copyright content, but as they say .

Fortunately, manufacturers of 3d printers do not have the slightest incentive to implement DRM in their devices, but who knows what legislation in this field is waiting for us in the future and what the situation may be in these manufacturers.

It seems ahead of us is waiting for another interesting round of struggle adherents of copyright and free distribution, and hope for the triumph of reason over greed.
