Akamai is going to open P2P service

The largest online CDN-network Akamai is going to open a peer-to-peer content delivery service. Information about this was leaked from Akamai's largest customers, who received invitations to a special briefing on November 6 dedicated to this announcement. No details are yet known, but the news itself sounds quite intriguing.

Akamai management has long declared its interest in P2P technologies, which can very organically complement the standard infrastructure of Akamai proxy servers located in all key Internet sites. This interest is also indicated by the fact of buying a Red Swoosh P2P startup.

Thus, Akamai may become the first traditional CDN provider to offer a hybrid CDN and P2P service. VeriSign and CacheLogic are already offering this service, but both of them are trying to build a P2P-based CDN infrastructure, while Akamai does the opposite, so the result of this experiment should be interesting.
