Elcomsoft has learned to break passwords with a GeForce video card

The Russian company Elcomsoft has applied for a US patent describing the method of selecting passwords by parallel computing on graphics processors (GPUs). According to the director of the company Vladimir Katalov, using GeForce 8800 Ultra cards, you can increase the speed of password selection by 25 times. Even on cheap $ 150 graphics chips, passwords for Windows Vista are cracked in three to five days, although the process takes several months using standard computing techniques.

The advantage of the GPU over conventional CPUs is that they are capable of performing massively parallel computations. They can process hundreds of thousands of blocks of information at the same time, while the central processor solves problems in a strict sequence, one after the other.

NVidia released development tools for its processors in February 2007. Using the tools from the NVidia CUDA package, you can write programs that directly refer to the graphics processor.
