Anti-piracy robot in paranoia mode

Right holders are sending more and more requests to Google to remove “pirated content” from the search results, in accordance with the DMCA law. Google obediently fulfills requests, but then publishes information about remote URLs. Thus, the efforts of rights holders replenish the database of unlicensed content .

The most deletion requests are sent to Google on behalf of Microsoft — thousands of addresses come every day, where pirated versions of Windows 8, Visual Studio or Office 2013 are located. Over the past year, 4,826,032 URLs with pirated Microsoft products were removed from the Google index (on average , at 13186 per day).

Recently, an automatic anti-piracy filter made a specific failure. Wikipedia, TechCrunch, BBC, CNN, various scholarly journals, and even several US government sites are on the deletion list sent by LeakID at the request of Microsoft. Allegedly, they are "pirates" of Windows 8.

Fortunately, Google was ready for this development: there is a “white list” of sites for which the DMCA automatic removal procedure does not work. So these documents remained in the search results.

Another thing is interesting: how did the anti-piracy robot suspect the following links in the illegal distribution of a pirated copy of Windows 8?

At first glance, they have nothing in common. But, if you look closely, there is something: this number is 45. It is also found in these articles from Wikipedia: The civil war in ancient Rome ended in 45 BC, and the Glock pistol shoots bullets of .45 caliber.

Of course, the number 45 is not a reason to remove these documents from Google search results. Just proof of the glitchiness of the filter.

This is not the most fun glitch: in 15 requests on behalf of Microsoft from the Google search engine they need to remove links to Bing.com, that is, to Microsoft’s own search engine.

The search for pirated content ordered by Microsoft is handled by several third-party companies , including Marketly, DtecNet (MarkMonitor) and LeakID, on their account 3.26 million remote URLs, 1.34 million and 270 thousand, respectively. By the way, the founders of Marketly are former Microsoft employees.
