In one of the episodes of the fantastic sci-fi movie Equilibrium, the main character avoids being charged with an emotional crime because his pistol, equipped with the owner’s radio ID, was in the hands of the antagonist through uncomplicated manipulation. Such a trick may soon be a reality, only in a positive sense, of course, since scientists of the Russian Central Research Radio Engineering Institute named after Berg (TsNIRTI) recently presented a weapon control system based on installing special scanners designed for mounting into weapons and identification arrow by various biometric parameters.
According to the plans of the developers, the functionality of the scanners should consist in the complete control over the weapon’s weapon capabilities and their accounting depending on various conditions. The following situations are given as examples:
')
- The use of a pistol issued to a specific person will not be possible to anyone else, because before using it a reliable biometric identification will be carried out.
- If the change of the police officer is over, then using the standard weapon for its intended purpose also fails
- Accounting for weapons, thanks to the built-in radio sensors, will also become much easier - just enough to bring the weapon to the reader and get all the information about its owner.
At the same time, the semi-fantastic possibility of sticking weapons and fixing its position in some global monitoring system, while, apparently, remains open.
The development of a biometric scanner system is already presented at the highest level - to specialists of the military-industrial commission under the Russian government, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin. It is especially noted that if a positive decision on the use of the system is received, it can be installed on any weapon - a pistol, rifle, automatic - and at the same time the implementation of the system will take only about a year.
It is impossible not to notice that attackers of various kinds - including computer ones - in connection with a possible new introduction, are facing a completely new field of activity, and the events of William Gibson's novels, such as Neuromant, are not that fantastic.
