TopCoder Open is the annual programming world championship that has been held since 2003. This year it was held in Orlando. To get to the final competition, you must pass a difficult multi-stage selection. The first stages are conducted online: thousands of participants from different parts of the globe demonstrate their ability to solve complex algorithmic problems. 24 winners are invited to an in-person tour. But the selection does not end there: applicants are divided into two semi-finals of 12 people, and as a result, the best of the best get to the final - only eight people. Getting into this eight is already a great achievement.
All participants in a full-time tour receive cash prizes, and the prize for first place this year was 15 thousand dollars.
The system of conducting all rounds on the TopCoder Open is approximately the same: participants are given three tasks - conditionally simple, medium and difficult - and 75 minutes to solve them. The faster the participant solved the problem, the more points he gets for it. Before the announcement of the results, there are 15 more minutes, when the participants can look at each other’s solutions and find errors in them. For each test found, on which the opponent's program works incorrectly, the finder receives additional points.
Participation and victories in competitions of this level bring not only pleasure and money, but also allow you to learn a lot and give great career prospects: Yegor himself helps to move the mobile direction of Yandex, one of his former teammates (and at the same time co-author of this text) is the deputy head of the development service Yandex.Direct advertising technology, and another, Pavel Nalyvayko, now lives in Zurich and is working on the quality of Google search.
Congratulations to Yegor with a victory!
