Those who use the multi-protocol client
Miranda , or rather its
HotCoffee assembly, and especially those who regularly read their forum, know that the author of this assembly,
Egoist , is going to create another client called
Opium . This will be a program written from scratch.
With this post I want to start tracking the development of this project, since, judging by the words of Egoist, it will compete with his own HotCoffee assembly, as well as with the popular QIP, Miranda and ICQ.
Not so long ago, the author slightly lifted the veil of secrecy about "Opium":
• Opium is based on libpurple, a free IM engine used by clients such as
Pidgin and
Adium .
• Unlike the above clients, Opium will be fully cross-platform (it works in Windows, MacOS X and Linux) thanks to the use of its own technology of unified interface rendering (the working name Smoke Framework), which over time will be separated into a separate commercial product (the client will remain free ).
• A new client will be even more socialized, with a new community center on a fully redesigned web resource, which should be launched in late October.
• Due to the large amount of additional work (refinement, debugging, testing and preparation of official Smoke Framework API specifications for third-party developers, developing a fundamentally new community home) and my preparation for passing the MCPD certificate (http://www.microsoft.com/learning /mcp/mcpd/default.mspx), the release dates of the first public versions of Opium will be announced no earlier than the end of the current year.
• Work to improve the current project HotCoffee will not be terminated until the release of Opium.
• In the first versions of Opium, only one protocol is likely to be available. This is either ICQ or Jabber.
• Smilies will not be from standard existing kits.
• Thoughtful and intuitive settings dialog.
')
Egoist also promises a “completely revolutionary interface” and writes that it has already assembled a team to create and promote Opium.
Now on the
main page there is such a picture:
We are waiting for the opening of the community. It is logical to assume that other details about this client will be opened with it.
