Offline desktop versions of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Premiere may disappear from the market in about ten years as unnecessary. Adobe is preparing for this future.
Executive Director Bruce Chizen at the Web 2.0 conference announced that his company is now working hard to transfer all software to an online platform. The process will take about ten years. This is a very bold statement, because in fact ten years is not such a long time, so many experts are quite skeptical about the Adobe initiative.
However, the migration process to online has already begun. Adobe recently released online versions of several applications, including
Premiere Express video editor. Two weeks ago, an improved preview version of an online photo editor,
Photoshop Express, was demonstrated (see the clickable screenshot). Unfortunately, both of these programs are still much inferior to offline counterparts in terms of functionality and ease of operation, although the same online Photoshop Express already knows how to work with layers, and with vector graphics, and supports sophisticated filters.

Recently, Adobe has demonstrated a new
Hydra graphics programming language that will be integrated into the next version of Flash. This is a very impressive development that is well suited for online applications.
