This Sunday, September 30, all users in Russia celebrate the 14th Internet Day (not to be confused with the birthday of Runet (April 7)).
In 1998, the Moscow company IT Infoart Stars offered to support the initiative to create this holiday and conducted the first “census of the Russian-speaking population” of the Internet, according to which the number of Russian users was 1 million people. Since then, the number of Internet users in Russia has steadily increased. According to the Coordination Center of the national domain of the Internet, this year the number of users reached
59 million .
By 2012, in the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet (RuNet), there were more not only users, but also domains. For example, the .RU domain, the main national domain of Russia, prepared well for the holiday and a week ago crossed the milestone of 4,000,000 registrations, once again confirming its leadership.

The dynamic development of the .RU zone confirms the age of domains: in more than 38% of domains, it is less than a year.

According to world statistics, the .RU zone is almost on a par with the Chinese .CN zone in terms of the number of domains, ahead of the .EU zone created for users of EU countries.

The .RU zone is actively developing, which is perfectly demonstrated by the diagrams. REG.RU, as the leading Russian registrar, contributes to this process. Last month alone, domain growth in REG.RU amounted to more than
32,000 domains , which accounted for more than 50% of all registered domains in Russia.
There are significantly fewer registrations of domain names in the zone. RF, than in the .RU zone, but it is also significantly, by as much as 16 years younger than the “elder brother”. The statistics given below makes it possible to judge that in less than two years the domain. The Russian Federation has gained high popularity among users.

Despite the fact that many consider the domain zone .SU (launched back in 1990 and intended for the countries of the USSR) irrelevant today, the statistics say the opposite: more than 30% of the .SU domains were registered this year.

The geography of the distribution of domains by citizenship or the registration of their administrators is striking in its diversity. Naturally the most popular in Russia .RU, ., .SU, are also popular in other, sometimes extremely exotic countries. Domain
.RU , for example, is administered by citizens of Belize (77 208), Andorra (69 771), Seychelles (69 692), British Indian Ocean Territory (55 632). It seems that these island states are very actively using Runet - for each resident, including children and infants, there are approximately 2 domains.
The domain zone
. after the Russians and administrators "without a certain place of residence" for some reason interests the Swiss, and only then the people of Ukraine. More familiar is the list of countries where the zone
.SU is popular: Ukraine, the United States, Belarus.
Resource visitors located in
. ,
.SU zones are used as Opera browser, while site visitors in the
.RU zone prefer Chrome.
The most common length of domain names
.RU and
. is 9 letters, and in the zone
.SU most often there are 7-digit combinations.
Perhaps in the near future there will be more national domains, because RU.COM will also be included in their number. Domain .RU.COM has all the prospects for this, thanks to such advantages as the international status of the zone and the large number of domains available for registration. But the main "chip" .RU.COM is the combination in itself of the best features of the two domain zones: .RU recognition and international status .COM. Not so long ago, REG.RU invested the process of turning this zone into a new national one, presenting
40,000 free .RU.COM
domains to its customers.
The Internet is now not only an entertainment resource or source of information, but also an integral part of our life. Therefore, congratulations to all who are reading this post, with this "global" holiday!
