Google homepage blackened in San Francisco
Google decided to participate in the event " Lights Out San Francisco " ("Turning the lights off in San Francisco"), as part of the short offer to all residents of the city on October 20 to install one fluorescent lamp and turn off the lights for one hour, from 8 to 9 pm. To promote this event, Google’s home page changed its color from white to black, which could be observed by residents and guests of this city.
“In line with our company's commitment to environmental protection and energy conservation, we are actively supporting the Lights Out campaign, and have darkened our home page to help spread the word about the event, which we hope will be successful throughout the city,” reported on the page dedicated to the event.

Google also explains that, contrary to popular belief, constantly changing the background color to black does not save energy.
"In contrast, on flat panel displays (already occupying 75% of the market), a black display can actually increase power consumption."
