US scientists have developed soluble electronic circuits

A new class of biocompatible microelectronics, which is able to completely dissolve in water, can find wide application in medicine. A temporary implant created from such elements will not need to be removed from the patient's body after he has completed his function. In addition, this technology can produce biodegradable environmental sensors and even consumer electronics, which will be very easy to dispose of without harm to nature. On the contrary, it can serve as a good fertilizer.

The production technology is similar to that used in conventional electronics, but instead of thick silicon substrates are used the thinnest membranes, instead of silver for conductors and electrodes magnesium is taken, and for gates - magnesium oxide. Silicon, which in usual form dissolves in water extremely slowly, for hundreds and thousands of years, in the form of a super-thin film can disappear without a trace in a few minutes. Magnesium forms salts, which are part of many multivitamins.

The construction consists of a shell of proteins that make up the silk - a classic biocompatible natural material. All materials are contained in electronic circuits in quantities that are not able to significantly change their natural concentration in the body.

Unstable electronics can remain stable from several minutes to several years. In tests on laboratory rats, a temperature sensor for monitoring postoperative infections and a 64-pixel digital camera was demonstrated.

The project was developed by specialists from Tufts University, Illinois and Northwestern Universities with the support of DARPA.
