Tesla Motors is going to build a network of charging stations for electric vehicles
Today, Tesla Motors, an electric vehicle manufacturer, has announced the start of building a network of solar-powered Supercharger charging stations on major US highways.
According to Elon Musk (head and co-founder of the company), for everyday tasks, the system will provide the same level of comfort as petrol stations. By the way, for a three-hour drive, the Model S electric car at such a station needs to be charged for half an hour. Thus, the network must partially solve the problem of short-distance driving of electric vehicles. Charging service for Tesla Motors cars will be free.
Tesla Motors has already installed six stations on the highways of California, Nevada and Arizona. The station can charge from four to six cars at the same time. The cost of its construction is 250 thousand dollars. The company plans to bring the number of stations to a hundred within three to four years. Priority will be the so-called high-load corridors: according to Mask, Model S owners will be able to quickly get from Vancouver to San Diego, from Miami to Montreal and from New York to Los Angeles, using only electricity as fuel. The stations are designed to work with versions of the Tesla Model S with batteries of 85 kilowatt-hours, which allow an electric vehicle to travel approximately 320 kilometers on a single charge.
The start of construction of charging stations in Europe and Asia is planned for the second half of 2013.
