First-year students of the
University of Design and Art in Ontario this semester will study the history of the arts through a textbook worth $ 180 without pictures. The reason is that the university did not have time to “clear the copyright”, that is, to obtain the necessary permissions to publish the illustrations. This is absolutely crazy story
published in his blog the father of one of the students.
The situation is all the more absurd because the textbook for $ 180 (+ tax = $ 203) is obligatory for the course “The World Visual and Material Culture before 1800” (course
LBST 1B04 ).
The story is hard to believe, but it is true. The university has already sent a
formal response on this issue. They explained that the compiled textbook is unique, compiled from three editions with a total cost of more than $ 300, adapted and supplemented specifically for this course. If the university received a license to publish illustrations from original textbooks in publishing houses, the cost of the book would increase from $ 180 to $ 800. And the illustrations, they say, can be viewed in electronic form on the publishers website. So, students should be grateful that this semester will cost the textbook for this course so cheaply (in the next semester, you need to buy a new one).
