The dream of Linux in the car comes to life

Many motorists dream that parts from one car can be inserted into another, and that cars have modern computers with the support of the latest IT standards. Well, at least in the computer part, these cars were compatible with each other. In the future, this dream may well come true - a single platform for all cars will, of course, be Linux.

The Linux Foundation organized the Automotive Grade Linux Workgroup (AGL) working group to create "a single platform for automakers to develop their products." It has already entered Nissan, Toyota, Jaguar and Land Rover, as well as several related companies - Aisin AW, Denso, Feuerlabs, Fujitsu, Harman, Intel, Nvidia, Reaktor, Renesas, Samsung, Symbio, Texas Instruments and Tieto.

The AGL working group plans to use the Tizen project to create an open and free car platform based on Linux. As stated , a project based on Tizen will be created in the style of Debian or Fedora, only for the automotive industry.

In the automotive industry, the production cycle is much longer than in IT, everything here is much slower. Realization conceived have to wait not for months, but for years. Talk about using Open Source solutions in cars have been going on for many years, but so far without result. Each automaker is still seeking to install a proprietary computer system in the car. In this case, everyone spends money on development and testing. If manufacturers agree to support the “automotive” Linux distribution and the common reference platform, the process will finally move from a dead end. For manufacturers, this will be a way to reduce costs, and we will get cheaper cars with a single interface.
