What do the results of the survey of British firms on the topic of new gTLDs?

Nominet, the administrator of the national UK domain .UK, conducted a survey among 530 companies on the introduction of new top-level domains. The number of respondents included the most well-known UK firms that are engaged in both large and medium-sized and small businesses, and have their own website on the Internet.

As it turned out, 41% of organizations do not know anything about the new top-level domain program, despite the fact that ICANN has already accepted more than 1900 applications for new gTLDs, and the first top-level domains registered under these applications will start working next year. Interestingly, this figure almost coincided with the results of a survey among Austrian companies - according to nic.at, 40% of Austrian companies are not aware of the introduction of free registration of new gTLDs.

Also, according to a Nominet survey, 62% of companies are not going to register their own domain or any second-level domain in new zones. 22% of companies plan to register domains in new zones, but the company's main website will remain in an existing domain. 2% of companies are going to leave the old zones and place the organization’s main website in a new gTLD.

However, for analysts, the survey results turned out to be ambiguous. 41% of companies do not know about new gTLDs, but almost 60% know, and this is a very high figure - after all, on the Internet, only IT specialists and organizations involved in the protection of intellectual property are still discussing this program on the Internet.

And although Nominet, like Nic.at , believes that the new gTLDs have not found a wide response from the public, the numbers suggest the opposite - more than 24% of firms are already potential customers of the owners of new domain zones, which in the future may also register their own gtld. According to analysts , this foreshadows the great success of ICANN and the owners of new gTLDs. And, although the statement “there are three types of lies: lies, blatant lies and statistics” is true, this prediction is likely to be correct - with all the shortcomings of new gTLDs and with all the numerous mistakes, scandals and deadlines, ICANN received 1930 applications for new gtld. Even in the most optimistic forecasts, much smaller numbers were called.
