Zimbra founder tells how to make $ 350 million in two years

A separate series of Read / WriteTalk podcasts was devoted to interviewing Satish Dharmaraj , co-founder and CEO of the well-known web-based startup company Zimbra, which produces online office software. In two years, the company has grown from zero to $ 350 million (the amount for which Yahoo bought them in September 2007).

Satish recalls how he and his friends came to the idea of starting their own startup in December 2003. They left work and thought for a long time what to develop. To do this, it was necessary to understand what classes people spend the most time on the computer. In addition to surfing and searching the Internet, the third main activity is reading email. They decided to make an innovative email program with an Ajax-style Web 2.0 interface. The first alpha version was released in October 2005.

The development of the Zimbra mail program began six months before the Gmail mail service opened, embodying many of the unique ideas of Satesh and his comrades, but they did not quit their jobs and nevertheless released their product, which technologically was a cut above Google and two years ahead of Google in the implementation of the concept of a full-fledged web office.

In the next two years, Zimbra programmers were engaged in technical polishing of the product in order to prepare it for commercial use. They tried to ensure compatibility with IE 6 and IE 5.5, so that the program could work on old computers, which are very many in corporations. For this, the so-called standard Zimbra client was released, in addition to the Ajax client.

After adding the calendar function, a text editor and spreadsheets were also developed, all on Ajax in the best traditions of Web 2.0.
