Beta-version of System Center 2012 SP1 has become available for download. Beta includes updates for all System Center components and is, in terms of functionality, an almost complete release (feature complete). Only a very small set of additional functionality will appear later.
An extended description of what Beta brings can be found in the
Server & Cloud Blog team blog. I will note only a number of the most important moments from my subjective point of view.
Most importantly, System Center 2012 SP1 Beta provides management of the final (RTM) version of
Windows Server 2012 , including such new Hyper-V functionality as network virtualization, management of Hyper-V Extensible Switch extensions, creation of logical switches.

In addition to supporting SMI-S storage, Virtual Machine Manager now allows you to manage file storage based on Windows Server 2012. Thanks to SMB 3.0 in Windows Server 2012, Hyper-V can place VHD / VHDX virtual machine files in shared folders on a file server. The
SMB Transparent Failover and
SMB Multichannel mechanisms provide fault tolerance of these folders at the level of the physical server and communication channel / network adapter, respectively. Managing such file shares, including creating shared folders with the mode continuously available, is available from the VMM console.
In terms of heterogeneity, VMM in addition to Hyper-V hosts supports management of Citrix XenServer 6.0 and VMware vSphere 5.0.
Finally, within the framework of the hybrid cloud, the App Controller provides:
- virtual machine role role support in Windows Azure - VM deployment, VM management, remote VM connection;
- VM migration from VMM to Windows Azure;
- Deploy VMs in Windows Azure based on a service template from the VMM library.
In general, for each component of System Center you can find a rather impressive list of innovations.
