Nokia Case (Summary)

The abundance of comments to the previous post led me, firstly, to the experiment, and secondly, to sum up the subtotals regarding the real possibilities of the PureView technology. My friends and I wore out and shot a remake of the Nokia Lumia 920 promotional video on the Nokia 808 PureView. Here's what came of it:

To begin with, for those who do not know, the video itself and the reflection of the operator with a DSLR camera:

And now our remakes:

Version 2

And here is how we shot:

In general, I would like to add that the controversy arising in the comments about the level of image stabilization in these videos looked quite strange. After all, the same YouTube provides a service for additional stabilization of already uploaded videos. I, by the way, for the purity of the experiment, did not use this tool, although YouTube determined that the video I downloaded was not stable enough and offered to stabilize it. But I refused.

This is not to mention the fact that there are many ways to stabilize the image in post-production. So all the talk about the level of image stabilization, especially a comparison of the level of stabilization in my remakes and the original Nokia video, shot like on a DSLR camera, and even not from a bicycle, but from a car, all these conversations are not worthless. I dare to assure you that there is almost no difference between DSLR and Nokia 808 PureView, if we talk about the picture. For example, the Canon 5D MarkII won the Nokia 808 PureView only with a 300% increase in the photo. Here the “mark” had a noticeable texture, while the “Purview” no longer exists. When shooting video in close-up mode, the Nokia 808 PureView gives exactly the same background blur as the “mark”.

In general, a quality product is absolutely realistic to receive both on a DSLR and on this wonderful camera phone. But the Nokia 808 PureView has a huge advantage over all other devices I know. The advantage is the technology of sound recording from CD quality Rich Recording. For this parameter, the Nokia 808 PureView does all. No other video gadget writes live sound like this pocket machine does. By the way, if the Nokia 808 PureView has 2 physical microphones, then the Lumia 920 already has 3. There is reason to believe that the Lumia 920 will write the sound even better.

Here are two examples of the test recording sound on the Nokia 808 PureView:

For the sake of truth, I must say that household, mass devices (from cameras and camcorders to smartphones), on which you can get quite acceptable video quality content, - weight. (here, for example, a review of several such devices ) Yes, the Nokia 808 PureView is unique, there is nothing analogous at the moment on the market. However, it is not a big deal. What with the fact that this smartphone can be removed absolutely full movie? Where to show it and why even shoot it? With the current filmmaking system and, especially, film distribution and film distribution, amateur or, more precisely, off-system films are doomed to crash into video hosting sites. At the same time, I do not know how anyone, but personally I already got enough to watch a good movie from a computer monitor.

However, these are questions that relate to one of my future posts. Finishing the story with the Nokia promo video, I want to point out one more detail. The fact is that the Nokia promotional video was uploaded to YouTube in 720p resolution. Whether stabilization has been applied to it in production or when uploading to YouTube is not known. With the same success, the reflection of the operator, traveling with the DSLR camera in the van, could be completed later, and the video really could be taken from the bicycle, which was parallel to the girl.
