Sun Clarifies OpenSolaris Release Plans

At a specially organized open-source briefing for journalists, Sun gave a fresh piece of information about its plans to release OpenSolaris, as well as about the future of OpenJDK, the prospects for the GlassFish application server, and the possibility to implement Java on the iPhone.

The OpenSolaris operating system will be released as a binary distribution, in the same way that Linux distributions are distributed. As you know, this new operating system is positioned as an alternative to Linux , and the project is handled personally by Ian Murdock, former Linux Foundation technology director and creator of Debian Linux.

To work with packages in OpenSolaris developed a special system Image Package System. When installing the OS, it will also take a “snapshot” of the system, so that there is an opportunity to “roll back” at any time.
