Apple insures from Samsung and actively buys LTE-patents

The planned release of Apple's iPhone 5, one of the advantages of which should be support for fourth-generation networks, puts Tim Cook's company in a difficult situation - its largest competitor in the global market - South Korean Samsung - owns a large patent portfolio for LTE technology patents. The question is, is it unlikely that Samsung, having lost Apple’s court over the external similarity of their products, will keep itself from suing Apple just seeing that the iPhone is now using technology that is the intellectual property of a rival company?

According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office, the South Korean Intellectual Property Office last year, Apple did not have a single patent that relates to the LTE field. At the moment, the situation has changed dramatically - the company's portfolio from Cupertino includes 44 Apple-designed patents covering various LTE areas, as well as 274 patents from the same area that were acquired from Canadian and American semiconductor manufacturers - Nortel and FreeScale, respectively.

Also, because the Rockstar Bidco consortium, in which Apple owns a controlling stake, owns 116 patents, the most expensive company in the world owns a total of 434 LTE patents. In turn, Apple’s largest competitor, Samsung, owns 819 patents from the same field; Thus, Apple has a share of patents, slightly more than half the number of Samsung patents.

Thus, according to analysts, the behavior of Apple in the market indicates that the company intends to insure itself against future lawsuits Samsung, having an impressive portfolio on LTE-technology. Since in the latter case, in court, we can talk about strictly technical things that one can make unambiguous judgments, Apple’s concerns are far from being groundless.
