Amy Wright, Compliance Officer
YouTube is the platform on which we allow publishing the most diverse content, but at the same time we need to be sure that users follow our
Community Guidelines . This is a mutually beneficial balance, so we very much count on your help.
I will explain in more detail. Watch the video below. Notice the difference? It seems that this is the same movie. However, there is a difference.
Video # 1
Video # 2

Perhaps this distinction will seem insignificant to you, but the
context of these two videos is completely different. The first video is posted almost without additional information, but the description of the second video is quite informative. Why does it matter? Because video itself doesn’t always tell the whole story. The name of the video, its description and tags matter. It often depends on them whether it will be reviewed for compliance with the YouTube Community Guidelines.
This is a compromise. As can be seen from the examples above, it is rather difficult to understand the intentions of the user who uploaded the video. Why is it so important for us to understand them? Nudes, cruelty scenes, or hard-to-see content are prohibited on YouTube. However, we make exceptions when it comes to educational, documentary, scientific and artistic videos. And in order to decide whether the video falls into the category of exceptions or not, we need your help. The more information you provide, the more obvious your intentions will be to us.
As much as possible context. Title, description and tags are the best way to provide information about the video. When our team watches videos marked with a flag, names or tags (for example, “art performance” or “street unrest in Jakarta”) help them understand the context of the video.

Here are some tips to help you provide as much information as you can about the video:
- Come up with an informative and revealing title.
- Try to add to the description the exact data: who is filmed, what happens, where and when, and also why the shooting took place.
- If you have a website (or you know a website) where you can find more information about the content, for example, video news or an author-related interview, specify a link to it in the description.
- Think of an audience. What do you want to achieve with your content? Help the viewer, inform him and give him the opportunity to discover something new.
- You can add details directly to the video using our tools for creating notes / comments .
- Even if you download videos from a mobile phone, we still ask you to provide as much information as possible about the content.
But remember, there are boundaries anyway . Do not forget that we still do not allow downloading certain content. Do not publish videos that focus on nude or contain scenes of violence and cruelty. Do not install clips from materials from other resources, unless you change their original intent. Do not try to circumvent
Community Principles or find loopholes in them.
Everyone makes mistakes . If your video has been removed from the site, and you believe that this happened by mistake, you have the opportunity to challenge this decision. You can learn more about the appeal procedure
on the page of our Support Center. And remember that the main thing is the context. The more details you give to the audience at once, the more likely that everyone will understand your intentions, and the less chance the movie has to be removed.
We hope this explanation will help you better understand what we pay attention to when watching content on YouTube. Our mission is to inspire users, help them share information, educate, entertain and inform their audience. With your help, it will be easier for us to monitor the quality of content on YouTube.
