Literally two months before the official release of Windows 8, Windows XP finally surrendered its position in favor of a younger product, having more than successfully survived both Vista and Windows 7, and almost the entire development period of Windows 8.
The August data from the Net Application agency, which collects various statistics on the Internet, suggests that the share of Windows 7 in the global market is currently 42.76 %, and the share of the closest competitor, Windows XP, is 42.52 %.

As you can see, both competitors breathe in the back of their heads, however, if you follow the same situation in Russia, it is clear that our situation is much more clearly in line with the emerging global trend - Windows 7 is far ahead.
Also, after examining the percentages of operating systems and applying a not entirely honest technique, you can make another interesting conclusion - Apple’s operating system on the world market bypassed, albeit generally unsuccessful, but still ranked third in the “global standings” of Windows Vista - The total percentage of OS X users is almost 7 %, while the share of Vista is 6.15 %.
