Windows 8 is a work of art. But this is not Linux

In the vastness of the English-speaking network, I found the experience of using Windows 8 by one of the people who usually sit on Linux. I want to share with you some impressions from that note . No, there will be no eternal raids on Windows, the prophecies of Vendekapts and other sins. Everything is pretty nice.

so

I put myself Windows 8 the other day. I tell you - it's cool.
')
No, without any sarcasm - Windows 8 is definitely a success.

Quickly loaded, good interface, right out of the box caught all the whistles of my laptop, until the last notification light, the applications run quickly. Damn, I even liked the file copy dialog.

Seriously, the copy dialog in the eighth Windows is beautiful. If you have not seen it yet, but you like cool interface solutions, be sure to take a look. To say that the guys from Microsoft impressed me - to say nothing.

But I, nevertheless, will be back on Linux. Why? What is it about Linux, that, sincerely enjoying another OS, I still want to go back? Why do not I put on all computers Windows 8 and feel happy?

I was stuck in a traffic jam for a couple of hours yesterday, and I thought a lot about it - what exactly attracts me to Linux?

What is open source Linux? Yes, no, not quite. No, in a sense, open source is great, but it’s not what makes me use Linux. Even on my desktop PC, I write pieces of proprietary code (I'm a developer).

Maybe convenient package management? Whatever I need, I can quickly find and install it with the simplest apt-get install. No, not the same. Although package management and repositories are a big win for Linux.

Security? Different distributions? Cool desktop? Nah All this is beautiful, but this is not the very thing that pulls me to Linux.

Then it dawned on me. I love it: right click to remove the panel.

This very ability to gradually remove unnecessary elements from the interface until only what is needed remains and nothing else. That is, you just sit like that, you look at the screen, you didn’t like some thing, you click on it with the right button, and “Hey, thing_ on_ my_Work__Steel! I don't need you anymore! Free!

All these panels, bars, docks, widgets - all this can be removed at will. Simply and at any time.

I think this is really some part of the Linux design philosophy. Yes, and Linux software. Something like “I don't like it? So delete! ”
And I love it. Love very very much.

Want me to prove you how cool this is? Click the right button and try to remove the panel in Windows 8.

From the translator.

The specifics of my work is not related to programming or development. I work a lot with texts for a long time - articles, translations, proofreading, scripts. I do simple websites on popular CMS. I master the layout and php. That is, in any case I am not so tempted in IT to fully understand all the abrupt internal differences of these systems from each other.

But as an ordinary user, I somehow set up Linux for myself. For general development. And, reading a note by a foreign author, I understand him. At first, it was unusual for me, like anyone, I think, who had just moved from Windows to Linux, but then I was hooked on similar pieces. And repositories, yes. Great thing.
