Almost a year and a half has passed since the release of the
previous version (13.37) and finally yesterday (September 28, 2012) a new version of
Slackware Linux has been released , numbered 14.0. It should be said that this is the oldest of the distribution kits supported today, whose age is 19 years.
Slackware users should remember that the number 37 in the last release meant the third number in the kernel version. As can be seen, this new numbering scheme was decided to be abandoned, apparently due to a change of approach in the kernel numbering and in place of the third digit of the new release version, you can see zero, which does not correspond to the version of the kernel used.
Major changes and updates in the new release:
- updated kernel 3.2.29
- updated GCC 4.7.1
- updated Xfce 4.10
- updated KDE 4.8.5
- updated to Firefox 15.0.1
- updated Xorg 1.12.3
- added network manager
- LLVM 3.0 added
- Update: removed HAL
- Update: JRE and JDK removed
- etc.
Also now Slackware has got the official
Wiki . Let's hope that after a while it will be able to compare with the
Wiki Arch Linux .
As always, all the latest information is available on the
official website , and you can
download the latest release either from
one of the mirrors or
using a torrent . Those who need the ability to run 32-bit applications on Slackware 64, as usual, can use
aliens multilib packages . Anything that is missing from the official repository can be searched on
SlackBuilds.org .
