Interview with Charles Wetzerell, author of "Etudes for Programmers"

It is no secret that more than one generation of programmers read out the book “Etudes for Programmers” by Charles Wetherell, the original of which was published in English in 1978 already.

The book contains 27 "etudes." Each study is a complete meaningful task for students of programming. Surprisingly, the book is over 30 years old, but any of the etudes can still be used for its intended purpose. Himself, being a fan of the book, I still keep my own paper version of the Russian edition, and relatively recently purchased the original in English .

Alas, there was very little information about the author himself, and moreover - there was no continuation or new books to make it extremely strange after such a good first book.

By the will of fate, I recently had the opportunity to contact Charles and interview him.

The first time this book came into my hands twenty years ago, and questions, as you can understand, have accumulated: why the book has never been reprinted and there was no continuation (main question), how sketches were thought out, how Russian translators “broke” Vigener's cipher in the encrypted text (and what is the key word there after all), how were the rights to publish the Russian version of the book bought, what is the author doing now, and will there be a reprint, etc.

By agreement with Charles, I publish the text of the interview only in my blog, so here I am forced to give only a link.

So - Interview with Charles Wetherell , the author of the book "Studies for Programmers."

This link leads to a Russian translation, also made by me, in the title of which there is a link to the original interview in English. If you have your questions for Charles, you can ask them in the comments of the original interview in English . Charles will try to answer them. If you have absolutely no opportunity to ask a question in English, but really want to, then leave it on the Russian page. I will try to translate and repost.

Comments on the translation or the text is better to write to me personally, and not in the comments.

PS

A few more of my interviews.
