Facebook stores data in one data center and processes 500 TB of data per day.

Jay Parikh, vice president of infrastructure for the largest social network in the world that is not having the best days on the stock exchange, told reporters about some of the statistical indicators of his company's work, which makes it possible to estimate the scale of the data and the number of users actively working with Facebook.

First of all, it turned out that unlike many companies that build a distributed network of data centers to facilitate the delivery of content to users from different regions, Facebook stores all the data in one “cluster” of more than 100 PB, which is more than any of the clusters of companies' data centers comparable in scale to Facebook. This allows engineers to quickly access the network and monitor its status.

Many Facebook functions require prompt scanning of user data - for example, it is required to quickly place status updates of friends and other news in the “Chronicle” or to offer possible “friends” - for this, the network infrastructure processes half an hour 105 TB of existing content.

In general, the main statistics of the user base is as follows:

It goes without saying that Perikkh claims that Facebook engineers are making maximum efforts for the fastest network operation and improvement of user experience - data processing takes place “almost in real time”. “We cannot allow a photo to be uploaded for a whole week,” he says.
