Nikon released the camera running Android

Nikon Coolpix s800c works under Android 2.3 and is almost the same on the back of a regular smartphone: three hardware buttons and a 3.5-inch OLED touchscreen. There is WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS, a 16-megapixel CMOS sensor with a diagonal of 1 / 2.3 inches can shoot with sensitivity up to ISO 3200, the lens - 10x zoom with equivalent focal length of 25-250 mm, f / 3.2-5.8. The camera shoots FullHD video, high-speed shooting is possible (from 60 fps at a resolution of 1280x720 to 240 at 320x200).

The image processing is handled by the Expeed C2 processor, the Android OS has the Cortex A9 processor and 512 MB of RAM.

Sales of the camera will begin in September, the price in the USA will make 350 dollars.

Coolpix s800c is not the first camera for Android. In January of this year, a similar harvester was introduced by Polaroid . However, among the major manufacturers, only Nikon has so far begun the production of such hybrids. In March, it was reported that Samsung and Panasonic are also looking in this direction .

Considering that a microphone and a speaker for recording and viewing video in compact cameras already exist, manufacturers need to take only one small step to enter the smartphone market - to provide such a “soap box” with a GSM module.

UPD: Engadget journalists managed to get one copy of the s800c for testing. Unfortunately, Nikon is not yet allowed to publish photos and videos taken by the device, but the overall impression is pretty good. A very important detail - the camera module can work independently of the OS, so it’s not necessary to wait until Android is loaded to take a picture. The system performance was also measured - the test Vellamo 1.0.6 showed 614 points.
