IEEE is preparing a 1Tbps Ethernet standard

The latest 40GbE and 100GbE standards at 40 Gb / s and 100 Gb / s, which the IEEE institute approved in 2010, won't be long enough. IEEE experts have published an expert assessment (pdf) of network bandwidth growth and a forecast for the future. According to their data, the volume of IP traffic is growing exponentially, doubling approximately every 18 months.

For users, the maximum download speed on modems is also increasing by 50% per year for the last 29 years.

“We expect that by 2015 the necessary capacity will be ten times more than in 2010, and in 2020 - 100 times more than in 2010,” says John D'Ambrosia , chairman of the 802.3 Higher-Speed Ethernet Consensus working group, which has begun preparing new 400 Gbps and 1000 Gbps Ethernet standards.

The table shows the average annual growth of traffic in some sectors with normalization to 2010.

Even more impressive forecast for the growth of the volume of stored information. If in 2010, humanity generated about 1 zetabyte of information (approximately 143 gigabytes per inhabitant of the Earth), then in a decade the number of servers will increase by an order of magnitude, and the amount of information will increase 50 times.

Ethernet traffic directly depends on the traffic on the Internet and the amount of stored information, because the internal networks serve the transfer of data from servers, which also consume more and more resources.
