Google, through the mediation of the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), intends to conduct an experiment, the goal of which is the potential possibility of updating Android on any devices to the current version of the system, without waiting for the device manufacturer to implement it.
Leading AOSP developer Jean-Baptiste Queru in the Google Building Android group yesterday left a note, the meaning of which is as follows: AOSP is developing an upgrade of the Xperia S smartphone to a newer version of the system and plans to carry out similar projects for other devices in the future.
At the moment, the AOSP-update Xperia S to Android 4.0 has the status of an experiment that Google assigned to the project, but the FreeXperia team has already joined the work, which in the framework of Cyanogen is working on XPeria smartphones. The device itself was chosen because it is quite a powerful device (2-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S3, screen diagonal 4.3 ", screen 1280x720) with an unlocked bootloader - Sony favors cooperation with AOSP, allows you to fully manage your devices and even provides the community all necessary XPeria drivers.
Jean-Baptiste Kieru himself honestly admits that he doesn’t know how the project will end, but if successful, nothing technically prevents the community from doing similar projects to update other smartphones that the manufacturer may not have planned to update for a long time and whether it plans at all.
