Much hype has risen over the past week around Julian Assange. It almost did not reach the international scandal.
The foreign ministers of the countries of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) called on Ecuador and the United Kingdom to continue the dialogue on the case of Julian Assange and expressed support for Ecuador.
UNASUR includes 12 Latin American states, and three more countries - Cuba, Mexico and Panama - have observer status in this organization.
Earlier, the British authorities warned Ecuador that they could deprive the embassy of diplomatic status because it was no longer used exclusively for the purposes of its mission. However, due to the growing scandal between the two countries, the Foreign Office later said that although London would not give Assange the right to leave the country safely, it did not intend to forcibly enter the territory of the Ecuadorian embassy.
On August 16, Ecuador announced that it provides political asylum to the founder of WiliLeaks, Julian Assange. “The government has decided to grant diplomatic asylum to Mr. Assange,” said Ecuador’s Foreign Minister Ricardo Patiño. “The government has considered all the facts and arguments presented by Assange. He may be a victim of political persecution, ”added Patino.
Loud scandal around the portal WikiLeaks erupted after the publication on the website of documents of the US diplomatic service. The confidential materials posted on the website on November 29, 2010 contained, in particular, rather unflattering remarks about world leaders. Prior to this, WikiLeaks published tens of thousands of documents on the actions of American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The other day, Assange turned to Obama from the balcony of the embassy:
Julian Assange called the modern world “dangerous for journalists” and defended the freedom of speech from the balcony of the Ecuadorian embassy in London. First of all, he thanked the president and the people of Ecuador for providing him with asylum.
“I urge President Obama to do the right thing. The US must abandon the “witch hunt” regarding the WikiLeaks website. The United States must promise the whole world that they will not prosecute journalists for the fact that they shed light on the secret crimes of those in power. ”
Assange also thanked those who all this time came to the Ecuadorian embassy to express his support, despite the intention of the British authorities to storm the building. He stated that such an attempt was even made on Wednesday night.
“Being in the silence and darkness of the embassy, I could hear groups of police trying to enter the building, making their way along the fire escape stairs and emergency exits,” said Assange.
