Plasma TVs may ban in Australia

The Australian Parliament is considering a new law that imposes strict restrictions on the energy consumption of household appliances. The requirements are so strict that whole classes of modern devices simply do not fit into them. For example, almost all modern models of plasma TVs, as well as some LCD panels. All of them consume much more energy than ordinary television sets on kinescopes, and this fact, apparently, threatens the national security of the country, experts at the government of Australia say.

The standard introduces a new energy efficiency rating system, in accordance with which all products will receive a rating from one to six stars, so that the buyer can see how much electricity this device consumes. At the same time, the concept of “minimum acceptable energy efficiency standard” is introduced, to which practically none of the current models of plasma TVs correspond.

Of course, there is no particular reason for panic. If the new law is adopted, it will come into effect only from 2011, and by this time manufacturers should develop and produce less “voracious” TV models.
