Google files a lawsuit against Apple, requires banning imports of iPad, iPhone and Mac in the US

Motorola Mobility (a division of Google) has filed a new patent lawsuit against Apple with the statement that Siri and other functions of Apple devices infringe Motorola Mobility patents.

The lawsuit relates to seven patents that describe various inventions, including audio / video players, email notifications and location reminders. The text of the document is not published in the public domain, so it is not yet possible to accurately list patents.

The case is filed with the US International Trade Commission (US International Trade Commission), and for the duration of the investigation Motorola Mobility is demanding that it prohibit the import into the US of devices that may violate patents: iPad, iPhone, and Macintosh computers.

“We wanted to settle the dispute out of court, but Apple’s reluctance to agree on licensing terms leaves us no choice but to protect ourselves and the innovations of our engineers,” Motorola Mobility said in an official comment on the lawsuit.

The ban on imports during the investigation is a standard practice. For example, Samsung devices have long been banned from importing into the United States due to a lawsuit from Apple.

Motorola Mobility and Apple have been arguing about the aforementioned patents since at least 2010, when licensing negotiations were interrupted. In turn, Apple has expressed the view that Motorola Mobility is making excessive demands, while Motorola Mobility itself and other manufacturers of Android devices violate Apple’s patents by copying the key patented features of the iPhone.

This lawsuit is the second from Motorola Mobility against Apple. The first lawsuit was filed on July 23 and concerns four Motorola Mobility patents, including a patent for data transmission over WiFi. The US International Trade Commission will announce the final decision on the first lawsuit on August 24 and may impose a ban on the import of iPhone smartphones into the US. However, the preliminary conclusion of the commission on the first lawsuit is in favor of Apple - probably for this reason, Motorola Mobility is filing a second lawsuit.
