The adjective "illegal" in relation to the access point sounds strange. Right almost the "point" of the distribution of illegal drugs. But the organizers of the Olympics in London have repeatedly stated that they will try with all their might to prevent the “blockage” of wireless networks in London. Viewers have already been asked to comply with the measure in sending tweets, and indeed, in any work with network applications. And the point is not that the organizers are trying to ensure equal rights for all spectators, including guests of the capital. No, the fact is that the TV channels that paid big money for the right to broadcast also work with wireless networks.
In particular, they use public access networks for the removal and exchange of telemetry data. If millions of people uncontrolledly consume wireless network resources, TV channels may face significant difficulties in receiving and sending the right data. It is clear that the organizers of the Olympiad will be responsible for all this.

Now the burden of ensuring the operation of wireless networks in London, at the time of the Olympics, is divided between the three companies. These are BT, Vodafone and O2. So far, all of these organizations cheerfully report on the normal operation of wireless networks, whose bandwidth has been significantly expanded through the use of additional resources. BT representatives said that wireless resources in London are four times higher than those of the Beijing Olympics networks. Still, this may not be enough.
The fact is that in 2008 Twitter was a fairly new service. In addition, few people at that time transmitted data from the scene in real time. Now the situation is completely different.
Everything is so serious that the authorities even sent police to search for illegal access points. It is unlikely that the creator of such a point would be put behind bars or forced to pay a significant fine. But some kind of punishment is probably foreseen. Tracking absolutely all the points is not so easy, since any mobile device can easily be transformed into a hotspot. But what to do, the organizers have to maintain order, even in such an unusual way.
