9gag received almost $ 3 million investment

The fast-growing Hong Kong project 9gag , dedicated to Internet memes, comics, and other kinds of online humor, raised $ 2.8 million in investment. This is reported by AllThingsD.

Investors were several venture capital funds and individuals. The funds will be used to increase the number of company employees, internationally expand the service and improve the platform on which the site operates.

The project participated in the 500 startups incubator and was launched in 2008. At the moment, the site has nearly 70 million unique users per month and a billion page views. This is the largest indicator for humorous sites, according to a press release. The investment was not prevented by the fact that the site often becomes the object of complaints about the theft of content from community members like Reddit and 4chan.

Also on June 30, 9gag released a mobile application for the iPhone, which can be downloaded from the App Store. In the near future, promises a version for Android.

9gag is intended for the publication of funny pictures and videos. Users can vote for content and leave comments. July 20, 2012, shortly after the reports of the shooting at the premiere of "Batman" in the US, appeared on social networks, a screenshot of one of the posts on 9gag began to spread.

The recording author warned of intent to kill visitors to the premiere of the film in Colorado. The post allegedly "liked" more than 15 thousand users. Later, representatives of the comic service denied the existence of the post presented in the screenshot.

In Russia, 9gag is the main source of all kinds of comic books and "smeshnyavok". It is from there that the majority of all those pictures are taken and translated, which then appear in various social networks and comic communities. The creators of the comic book tried to organize something similar to 9gag, but it didn’t go further than the exact same translation of pictures into Russian.
