Super Sensitive Touchscreens: Apple's New Patent

In Apple's opinion, touchscreens are usually more limited in their functionality, as they only allow you to track the position of a finger or stylus on a surface. New patent "Force Imaging Input and Device System", published by Apple last week, describes the technology with which touch screens will react not only to the position of the stylus, but also to the force of pressure on the screen.

According to the company, “one of the problems with touch screens as input devices is that they do not provide information on the strength of pressure. And this information can be used as another “dimension” that can be used to control devices. ”

To solve this problem, the inventors Brian Huppi and Steven Hotelling created a touch screen that consists of several screens connected by a membrane located below the surface. Clicking on such a screen will cause some deformation of the layers, which in turn will determine on which of the layers the contact was made. Depending on the force of pressing, one or another action will be determined.

The new technology from Apple will allow you to create completely new user interfaces for all sorts of devices. Starting from PC control panels in cars and ending with PDAs, smartphones and telephones.

However, at the moment Apple (according to the AppleInsider website) is not planning to release any devices with a new technology. There is nothing strange in this, since it often takes a long period of time from obtaining a patent to implementing a technology. But one thing is for sure: if Apple came up with such a thing and patented it, sooner or later devices with similar touch screens of the new generation will appear on the market.
