Regardless of the court proceedings related to the illegal distribution of music (which is more than 20 thousand lawsuits from the RIAA), Americans
continue to use p2p networks to exchange music files. And the popularity of p2p networks is growing.
The NPD Group, a market research company that monitors digital recordings, reported that in 2006, 15 million US homeowners illegally downloaded music files using file-sharing networks, which is 8% more than in 2005.
An interesting fact is that in 2006 the growth rate of the number of users of p2p networks began to fall, although the number of downloads naturally continued to grow: from 3.4 in 2005 to 5 billion files in 2006, which represented an increase in downloads of 47% .

At the same time, however, the number of legal downloads of tracks also increased and amounted to about 500 million in 2006, which is 56% more than in 2005.
