About the complexity of the test task or is it a lot of 40 hours

All of us periodically change jobs. In some, this process is easy, in others it is not very good, but you always have to prove that you are not a “camel”, i.e. confirm their qualifications.

I want to touch the job search by young professionals. In my work a little less than two years of official experience as a programmer and several Open Source projects. And now I’m looking for a job and periodically pass interviews - someone srashivaet about algorithms and data structures, someone gives to solve logical problems, and someone offers test tasks. I would like to dwell on them.

It so happened that in all firms where they asked to do some kind of test task, it was unpaid and not intended for commercial use (its sales, publications, etc.). But recently they offered to make a game. And it's not easy to “aim, shoot, kill” with graphics from Paint, and then, which you can then, after minor improvements, publish in the AppStore, Marketplace or Google Play Store. And the question: how much time does it take, approximately? Answered - "week!".

Many people sit here much more experienced than me and better versed in HR, hiring staff, etc. I have two questions for you:
  1. How much do you think it is right to give applicants a test task that requires a week or two to complete it? And how difficult, in your opinion, should it be? After all, if you do this for each company, then you can look for work for a very long time.
  2. And the second question: does the test task belong to the applicant or company? Can you then publish this test task and show it to other employers? Provided that some materials for its implementation were issued by the first company.
