How we created an introductory video for Vector

Today we want to tell you about the creation of the intro video for our game about Vector parkour - let's show the storyboard, animatic and tell other details of this exciting process.

The video director was our friend Rinat Timerkayev .

According to the idea, the video tells about the anti-utopian society of the future, in which there is no place for a free person. From the huge screens “Big Brother” talks about the perfect structure of their world. All people sit on the same workplace, and on their heads there are hoops that control the mind. In the middle of the movie comes the turning point - the main character throws off the hoop, runs from the guard and jumps out the window. This should give the viewer the right emotional state for the game.

This idea is detailed in the storyboard with which the work began.

The next stage was the color explication, which is the support for the light and color design of the final scenes. Initially, a gloomy and oppressive atmosphere of a dystopian future was assumed, therefore darkened surfaces predominate. Also, given the style of the game itself, the characters must be silhouette. As a result, the design of the video is based on the game of contrasts and bright spot lighting, which allowed to separate the character from the background, as well as on the use of reflections.

The timing of the video and the duration of each scene were determined at the stage of creating animatics. It is the animatic that allows you to start working on music and sound and as a result gives you a good idea of how the video will look. Sound and music for the video made by the studio "TriHorn Productions".

At this stage, it was also convenient to decide where to use 2d, and where - 3d. Suppose if a huge monotonous office space is supposed to be there, it makes no sense to manually draw each office cubicle. It is enough to make a model of one booth and just multiply it.

Some scenes required a mobile camera. In this case, it was much more practical to use 3d.

And in some it’s easier to use 2d animations.

Animation of the characters was done manually. For one of the video scenes, a video was used as a reference in which the animators themselves ran along the corridor, taking off their jacket.

In our case, most of the scenes were combined, i.e. 2d and 3d animation were equally used.

Voice recording took place in the USA at the Bad Animals recording studio. 15 actors took part in the audition. Each candidate recorded a short version of the script with a different tone in his voice and after that we chose the most suitable voice.
The voice that you hear in the video itself belongs to actor Dennis Bateman (you could hear his voice from the characters of Pyro and Spy in the game "Team Fortress 2").

Production of the video took 2 months. And this is what the finished version looks like:

For us, this is the first experience of creating an introductory video of a similar quality for a mobile game, and we are not going to dwell on this.
