Web Lab: Network magic in the real world

Jamie Goldstein, Chrome Product Marketing Manager, on behalf of the entire Web Lab project team

Inspiration can come in a completely unexpected form. For example, my interest in programming began with the Babbage Analytical Machine . Every time when I came to the Science Museum in London in my childhood, she literally enchanted me.

We have always believed that science and technology can inspire people. It was this idea that formed the basis of the exhibition that we are launching today on the Internet and the Museum of Science in London. Demonstrating the amazing possibilities of the modern network, we hope to inspire people to new projects, achievements and discoveries.

The beta version of the Web Lab project is a collection of five installations located at the Science Museum in London. Visitors can interact with objects in person at the museum or without leaving their own computer at chromeweblab.com . The idea of the project is to break the usual rules and conduct real experiments virtually. Now the location of the visitor and the opening hours of the museum do not matter!

Each of the five experiments - Universal Orchestra, Data Tracer, Sketchbots, Teleporter and Lab Tag Explorer - demonstrates the modern network technologies implemented in Google Chrome and representing a certain direction of computer science. For example, the Universal Orchestra experiment uses WebSockets technology, through which a visitor can see how people from different parts of the world together perform a piece of music on custom-made robotic tools that are physically located in the Museum of Science.

Visit the project site, come to the Science Museum in London (admission is free) and tell us about your impressions. The name of the project justifies itself: the exhibition, which will last a year, is a real laboratory. We will improve the experiments as we receive your feedback.

The future is now!
